OSBI agents and the Marshall County Sheriff's Office are working to determine who broke into a rural county home and stole a large steel safe. Authorities received a fire alarm call Thursday at 1:45 a.m. to a home off Old Willis Road north of Highway 32 in Marshall County. Forty-five minutes later, deputies discovered a white 2006 GMC pickup truck parked at the home was missing as well as a large, custom made safe. The safe is 4 feet tall, 4 feet wide, 4 feet deep and weighs approximately 1,000 pounds.
About 3:30 a.m. Cook County, Texas, deputies recovered the missing truck in a lake northwest of Gainsville, Texas. The safe has not been located. OSBI crime scene investigators have processed the truck and home for evidence.
Authorities believe the house was set on fire after the burglary. The State Fire Marshall's Office is investigating the blaze.
