Oklahomans who need assistance with high home heating bills this winter may be eligible for help from the federal Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program.

The application period for the program begins Dec. 1 and continues through Dec. 19 or until funds are exhausted. The LIHEAP program is administered by the Oklahoma Department of Human Services.

"Households that receive public assistance through OKDHS may be authorized automatically and will be notified of their eligibility and will not need to make application," said Cari Crittenden, OKDHS LIHEAP coordinator. "But many may not and those individuals need to check with OKDHS about their eligibility."

Crittenden also encourages households that are usually pre-approved to make application at their local OKDHS office if they have recently moved or did not receive a pre-approval notice this year.

Individuals can apply at their local Human Services Center and must provide household income information and their latest heating utility bill. Crittenden said verification of Social Security numbers for all household members and citizenship verification also must be provided.
