State leaders will celebrate the grand opening of the newly renovated State Emergency Operations Center (EOC) at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 2. Following a ribbon-cutting by Gov. Brad Henry, the 12,000 square-foot facility will be open to visitors throughout the day.
The State EOC is located in Oklahoma City at the Capitol Complex, 2401 N. Lincoln Blvd., in the tunnel between the Will Rogers and Sequoyah buildings.
Renovation of the EOC began in April 2006, thanks to a $1.9 million grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and a $654,000 appropriation from the Oklahoma Legislature. The facility was first constructed in 1963 to ensure continuity of government in the event of nuclear attack. Today's EOC is the epicenter of state resource management during times of manmade or natural disasters.
During the last two years, Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management (OEM) staff has overseen the state's disaster response-recovery efforts for 13 federal disaster declarations from a temporary EOC.
