OKLAHOMA CITY ??" Preparations are underway for the 19th annual Septemberfest to be held Saturday, September 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the grounds of the Oklahoma History Center, 800 Nazih Zuhdi Dr. Hosted by Governor Mary Fallin and First Gentleman Wade Christensen, Septemberfest is a free event for the whole family.
As a celebration of what makes Oklahoma unique, the event features attractions for people of all ages including living historians Pawnee Bill, a cavalry soldier and a trick roper strolling the grounds.
The Ag Venue is a popular section of Septemberfest coordinated by the Oklahoma Dept. of Agriculture, Food and Forestry. Booths will feature ag products including peanuts, dairy, beef and soybeans. The venue will also have a petting zoo, alpacas, an oxen team, pony rides, carriage rides, cow milking and dummy roping. The Shawnee Tractor Club will display old steam tractors and P&K Equipment will showcase modern equipment in contrast. A chuck wagon will serve food cooked the way it was eaten by cowboys and settlers.
Oklahoma Forestry Services will share a special computer program that lets homeowners assess their risk from wildfire and learn tips for protecting personal property. Frisbee-like flyers will be giveaways for kids and foresters will be on hand to answer tree questions.
"There are learning opportunities throughout the Agriculture Venue. It showcases all aspects of Oklahoma agriculture," ag venue coordinator Becca Lasich said.
Septemberfest was founded in 1997 by Friends of the Mansion, Inc., a non-profit, non-partisan organization whose mission is to preserve and improve the historic Governor's Mansion, as well as its grounds and furnishings. The Oklahoma History Center began co-hosting Septemberfest with Friends of the Mansion in 2004.
Septemberfest is free and open to the public with no registration or tickets required. For more information about the event or to volunteer, please visit www.fomok.org or contact Friends of the Mansion directly at (405) 557-0198.
