Know a teen who needs to unplug from his or her electronic devices and enjoy an adventure in the forest? Oklahoma Forestry Services' 59th annual Youth Forestry Camp offers swimming, canoeing, hiking and the opportunity to make new friends, all while learning about the environment. Registrations are being accepted from boys and girls ages 13-15 through May 8. Camp takes place June 1 ??" 6 in beautiful Beavers Bend State Park in southeastern Oklahoma.
???Wood you Believe???? is this year's theme and campers will learn about the many resources that come from trees, including some that will surprise them. Hands-on activities with natural resource professionals will include wildlife management, forestry management and stream ecology. These professionals, who represent organizations such as Oklahoma Forestry Services, Oklahoma Dept. of Wildlife Conservation, Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department, Oklahoma State University Research Extension, Lower Mountain Fork River Foundation and Weyerhaeuser Company will also discuss career opportunities with the teens.
???This is a great chance for teens to enjoy outdoor activities in a beautiful setting,??? said State Forester George Geissler. ???And the kids always leave with an enhanced understanding and appreciation of the environment, not to mention lifelong memories.???
The fee for campers is $175, which covers all costs, including lodging, meals, transportation at camp, field trips and workshops. A limited number of partial scholarships are available to help defray the cost. Camp staff applications are also being accepted.
