GRANT TITLE: JUSTICE ASSISTANCE GRANT (JAG)
The Byrne Justice Assistance Grant (Byrne JAG) is a federal criminal justice grant that helps states/territories, tribal nations and local governments meet identified needs and improve the administration of justice.
The existence of the Byrne JAG grant, including the amount each state/territory receives and the types of programs that can be funded, are outlined in federal law. The grant itself is provided to the District Attorneys Council through the US Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA). The amount we receive is calculated by a congressionally determined formula which analyzes our state's population and rate of violent crime. Importantly, local governments (think cities), of a certain size will apply directly for Byrne JAG through BJA. If you aren’t sure if this applies to your jurisdiction, reach out to us and we can let you know!
ELIGIBILITY: To be eligible for funding, an applicant must be a(n): a) State Agency; b) Unit of local Government (i.e., city, county, or town); c) Tribal Government; or d) Private, Non-profit Community - Based Organization.
PURPOSE AREAS: There are seven purpose areas under which JAG applications may fall. Each funding year, the Justice Assistance Grant Board prioritizes funding under these purpose areas. The purpose areas are:
BOARD PRIORITIES: The JAG Board, comprised of 17 voting and non-voting members, is charged with reviewing grant proposals and determining awards for the grant funds. Although there are six allowable purpose areas under the JAG, the Board will establish the specific priorities for funding. The application will specify the priority areas and only applications within these areas will be considered.
