Prevention Education

Young people who are involved in school are less likely to be involved in risk behavior. The Prevention Education section administers programs and initiatives that assist districts in addressing the risk behaviors in Oklahoma’s students. Programs and initiatives include:

What makes an effective prevention program?

  • Efforts must begin early at an appropriate grade level and continue throughout the student's educational career.
  • Must have strong leadership and ongoing commitment from all school personnel.
  • Continually train staff to sustain your prevention efforts.
  • Include socio culturally relevant programs.
  • Involve parents and community members in planning and executing prevention efforts.
  • Collect data on the effectiveness of the prevention programs and update accordingly.
