State Education Board Approves $289 Million Budget Increase Request That Includes Funds for Reforms, Teacher Pay Increases

Oklahoma State Board of Education members on Thursday approved a $289 million Fiscal Year 2014 budget increase request for public schools to be made to the State Legislature late this year as lawmakers prepare for the 2013 Legislative Session. The budget includes dollars for statewide implementation of reforms, as well as funds for teachers and school personnel.

State Board of Education Hears Preliminary Numbers on Budget Request

Oklahoma State Board of Education members on Monday reviewed preliminary numbers for a possible $289 million Fiscal Year 2014 budget increase request for public schools to be made to the State Legislature as lawmakers draw closer to the 2013 session. The Board will vote on a budget request at its next regular meeting on October 25.

Committee Members Sought for Certification for Instructors of Native American Languages

The Oklahoma State Department of Education is in the process of developing certification for instructors of Native American Languages in Oklahoma public schools. A committee will be formed to review past certification in our state, investigate similar certification in other states, and work to develop the new certification standards in collaboration with Oklahoma’s Tribes.

Elaine Hutchison, the 2013 Teacher of the Year, was recognized at the State Board of Education's regular monthly meeting Thursday. Board members also were given updates on A-F School Report Card data verifications and recent TLE Commission preliminary recommendations.

Fairview Math Teacher Named 2013 Teacher of the Year

Elaine Hutchison, an Algebra II, trigonometry, pre-calculus and AP calculus teacher at Fairview High School and Chamberlain Middle School in the Fairview School District and at the Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics Regional Center, was named the 2013 Teacher of the Year by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Janet Barresi during a ceremony Tuesday at the Oklahoma State Fair.

Rising Star Teachers Recognized

State Superintendent Janet Barresi recognized six Rising Star Teachers from across the state during Tuesday’s state Teacher of the Year Ceremony,. Rising Stars are teachers who have been in the classroom seven years or less but who show an amazing amount of promise in their profession.

Oklahoma Elementary Schools Receive STEM Awards

Ten Oklahoma elementary schools recently were named K20 STEM–Building STEM-Ready Elementary Schools. The first-time designation comes with grant funds for teacher training at the schools in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math. The program is sponsored by the Oklahoma State Department of Education in collaboration with the K20 Center.

Six Oklahoma Schools Receive Blue Ribbon Status

Six Oklahoma schools were named Blue Ribbon Schools on Friday, Sept. 7, 2012. The schools are among 269 national Blue Ribbon Schools. Schools are selected as Exemplary High Performing Schools or Exemplary Improving Schools.

Oklahoma schools receive ACT scores, college readiness indicators

Oklahoma high schools recently received ACT scores for students tested during the past school year along with information showing how prepared students are for college-level coursework.

REAC3H Coaches Assist State Teachers with Literacy Goals

After undergoing their second full week of intensive training this week at the State Department of Education, 60 REAC3H Coaches will be dispersed throughout the state to assist Oklahoma classroom teachers with the implementation of new education reforms such as third-grade reading sufficiency and the transition to Oklahoma C3 Standards, which include Common Core standards in reading and math and new state standards in social studies.
