OKLAHOMA CITY (May 27, 2014) – Kassidy Gary, a senior from Edmond North High School, recently received the Oklahoma State Fair’s Edward C. Joullian III Scholarship. Gary’s accomplishment was recognized at the State Board of Education’s May meeting.
“After reading the long list of accomplishments and leadership roles taken by this young woman, it is my honor to recognize her for this prestigious award,” state Superintendent Janet Barresi said.
Edward Joullian III served as the chairman of the board of the Oklahoma State Fair, Inc., for 10 years and was a founder of the partnership between the Fair and the Teacher of the Year program. The State Fair Board established the Edward C. Joullian III Scholarship to encourage Oklahoma students to continue their education, to recognize the state Teacher of the Year’s school district, and to celebrate the contributions of Mr. Joullian to the lives of Oklahoma’s young people.
The $5,000 scholarship is awarded to a high school senior in the current Oklahoma Teacher of the Year’s district. Peter Markes, a string orchestra and Advanced Placement music theory teacher at Edmond North High School, is the 2014 Oklahoma Teacher of the Year.
Edmond North counselor Carron Massengale and Advanced Placement chemistry teacher Sandra M. Brown recommended Gary for the award.
In her letter of support, Massengale wrote that Kassidy has maintained a perfect GPA while participating in the school’s most rigorous curriculum taking both pre-AP and AP classes.
Massengale also noted Gary’s ability to balance school with extracurricular activities. Gary is involved in number of leadership activities, including serving as cheer captain at her school and leading in ministry at her church. She is a member of Spanish Club, previously ran track and served as a BALTO candidate, Edmond North’s student charitable fundraising campaign.
Gary was named an AP Scholar with honors and is a member of the Indian Honor Society and the Oklahoma Honor Society, among other achievements. She also serves her community, including working in children’s ministry at her church, helping disadvantaged youth, working in nursing homes and going on mission trips.
