OKLAHOMA CITY (May 19, 2014) — State Superintendent of Public Instruction Janet Barresi issued the following statement about May 20 marking the one-year anniversary of the deadly tornado that struck Moore and other communities in central Oklahoma:
“A year ago on May 20, our state experienced the horrific fury of Mother Nature when a tornado swept through central Oklahoma. Among its victims were seven elementary school children in Moore. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families and friends, as well as with all those whose lives were changed forever that day.
“But as we remember those whose lives were tragically cut short, let us also honor the brave Oklahomans — including many teachers, administrators and other school personnel — who acted selflessly and courageously to protect our most vulnerable citizens. Many heroes emerged that day; their actions reflect the strong faith and community of Oklahoma.”
