The Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) is providing this public notice to solicit comments from local educational agencies (LEAs) and the public regarding a waiver request from the United States Department of Education. The waiver, if granted, would allow middle school students taking high school mathematics courses to take only the End-of-Instruction test, instead of taking both the End-of-Instruction test and the grade-level mathematics test for the students’ grade. For example, students taking Algebra I in eighth grade are currently required to take both the Algebra I EOI and the eighth grade mathematics test. If granted, the waiver would remove the requirement to take the eighth grade mathematics test.
A draft of the waiver request letter is attached. Comments received will be forwarded to the USDE with the requested waiver. OSDE will accept comments between Thursday, October 31, 2013, and Friday, November 15, 2013, via electronic submission or U.S. mail.
Please submit your comments in writing to Kerri White, Assistant State Superintendent of Educator Effectiveness, Oklahoma State Department of Education, 2500 N. Lincoln Boulevard, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 73105, or electronically to Kerri.White@sde.ok.gov.
