Meeting held in Frederick
The Oklahoma State Board of Education met in Frederick, OK, on Thursday, Nov. 15, 2012, at Frederick High School. Kaitlyn Stevens, a junior at the school, led the Pledge of Allegiance, and a select group of choral and band members sang the “Star Spangled Banner” at the outset of the meeting. A group of faculty, staff, students and Frederick Board of Education members hosted a lunch for the State Board members and State Department of Education staff before the meeting. State Superintendent Janet Barresi said the purpose of holding board meetings in districts throughout the state is to give board members a closer look at how their decisions affect local districts. It also gives districts a chance to celebrate their successes and discuss their challenges. Frederick Schools Superintendent Shannon Vanderburg said it was enjoyable to get to watch his students and staff interact with board members and share personal experiences that could never be conveyed in a written report.
Teacher, Leader Effectiveness Update Given
Assistant State Superintendent of Educational Support Kerri White updated board members on the Teacher and Leader Effectiveness evaluation system. She said her department is in the midst of conducting interviews to hire a new executive director of Teacher and Leader Effectiveness for the state. The Teacher and Leader Effectiveness Commission met in October and reviewed the original preliminary recommendations shared with board members in September. She said the commission made a few recommendations regarding other academic measures, which will represent 15 percent of the overall evaluation. Commission members also voted to have some working groups convene to get into the details of those measures. They decided to hold off on bringing formal recommendations to the state board until after working groups met, White said. The commission has had one formal working group, made up of 52 educators and four commission members, White said. The educators represent classroom teachers, building and district-level administrators, higher education, career tech, and educational organizations. The group met for two days recently discussing other academic measures and how to implement them in a way that is both manageable for districts but also will be consistent across the state. In the work of drafting the list of other academic measures, group members spent a lot of time discussing the purpose of the measures – whether they will measure student or teacher achievement, or measure the professional growth and development of an educator or the excellence of the educator, White said.
