Comment Sought on Standards, Competencies for Gifted Education Specialist

A committee was formed to create standards and competencies for certification of a gifted specialist.  The applications to the committee were reviewed with the goal of a broad representation of the state to include perspectives from rural, suburban, and urban districts.  Ultimately, thirty educators were selected that represented public and private schools grades PK-12, higher education institutions, professional organizations and private individuals from across the state.

Read the results of the committee’s efforts showing the standards, competencies as well as a certification process for an Oklahoma Gifted Education Specialist.

The Oklahoma Gifted Education Specialist Certification will not be mandated for teachers who are teaching gifted students, but teachers who are interested are encouraged to pursue the process.

We are looking for feedback from interested parties.  This is not a formal review, but a request for comments to insure that these items meet the needs of gifted students in Oklahoma.

Please submit your comments to Cathy Seward, Executive Director of Gifted Education, via email at Cathy.Seward@sde.ok.gov by Wednesday, April 19th.
