State Superintendent Barresi Signs Memorandum of Understanding with Kingdom of Spain

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Janet Barresi on Sept. 30, 2013, announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the State of Oklahoma and the Kingdom of Spain. She and Xavier Gisbert da Cruz, Counselor of Education for the Embassy of Spain, signed the agreement during a ceremony in the Blue Room of the State Capitol.

Oklahoma Closing Achievement Gap for Minorities in AP and SAT Scores

Participation on the SAT among minority students in Oklahoma has increased significantly over the past five years. At the same time, Oklahoma students continue to post SAT scores that are higher than the national average across all subgroups.

Representatives from College Board’s Southwestern Regional Office delivered the SAT and other test scores to the State Department of Education in a recent meeting.

Addressing Teacher Shortages

We’re at a crisis point in this state when it comes to our teacher shortage. For years we’ve seen shortages in subjects such as science and math, but now we are starting to see this spread to areas such as elementary and early childhood.  That’s a new phenomenon and one that must be reversed.

Late this summer, I convened an Educator Workforce Shortage Task Force made up of teachers, school administrators, higher education officials, state legislators and other civic leaders. I asked them to examine all aspects of the issue and devise action steps to help us move past this crisis.

Superintendent Barresi Offers Bullying Prevention Resources

In response to Governor Mary Fallin’s proclamation of Oct. 6-12, 2013, as Oklahoma Bullying Prevention Awareness Week, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Janet Barresi has launched a new webpage with tips for counselors and other educators who work with K-12 youth.

Prudential Searches for Top Oklahoma Youth Volunteers

 

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards has begun its 19th annual search for Oklahoma’s top youth volunteers.

Through November 5, students in grades 5-12 are invited to apply if they have made meaningful contributions to their communities through volunteer service within the past 12 months. The application can be found at spirit.prudential.com or by clicking here.

The Power of Assessments

I had the opportunity last week to participate in an interim study on Oklahoma school assessments hosted by state Sen. John Ford and state Rep. Ann Coody. I thank them and the other lawmakers in the room for the time they spent over the course of two days to hear from experts in every area of assessments. Presenters included classroom teachers, school administrators, higher education representatives, major testing companies such as ACT and SAT, and technology experts.

21st Century Learning Center Grants Awarded

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Janet Barresi recently announced the award of $2.6 million in 21st Century Community Learning Center (21st CCLC) grants to 13 recipients for a five-year period beginning with the 2013-14 school year.

National Math and Science Initiative's AP Program Expands to Tulsa Memorial

The National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI) today celebrated the expansion of its Comprehensive Advanced Placement* (AP) program to Tulsa Memorial High School, thanks to a grant from the Tulsa Community Foundation (TCF), the George Kaiser Family Foundation (GKFF), and the Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE).

Bullying Prevention Town Hall, Oct. 29 in Oklahoma City

The Anti-Bullying Collaboration of Oklahoma City is holding a Town Hall meeting to discuss bullying prevention from From 7 to 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013, at Southern Oaks Library, 6900 S Walker Ave. Educators, parents and guardians and members of the public are invited to attend.
