FIRST Robotics Grant Applications Available

Robotics program grant applications are now available to all Oklahoma public schools.

The State Department of Education (SDE), in partnership with FIRST Robotics, has approved a $70,000 budget item to support public school student participation in the FIRST Robotics Program. The SDE will provide grants up to $5,000 per school to facilitate recent start-up and existing team opportunities. The deadline for applications is 5 p.m. Sept. 23, 2013. Grant awards will be announced in October and available to schools in November.

Preparing for the Road Ahead

I had the best time last week attending the Vision 2020 conference. Thousands of educators joined us in Oklahoma City for this professional development conference.

I’m confident we gave them critical content and helpful updates as well as energized them for returning to school. I’m delighted to be able to provide this three-day conference. And, it was all FREE to Oklahoma teachers, educators and families of our students.

School Districts Receive Increased Per-Pupil Allocation from State for Coming School Year

 

This week, the State Department of Education released to school districts initial state aid allocations for the FY14 school year. Districts will see an increase in per-pupil funding of $8.60 per student. The initial allocation for FY14 is $3,038.60 per student as opposed to the $3,030.00 received for FY13.

Contributing most to the increase in FY14 state aid allocations is the State Department of Education’s receipt of an additional $21.5 million in funding for state aid to schools during this past legislative session.

2014 State Teacher of the Year Finalists Announced

WHAT: The 2014 Oklahoma Teacher of the Year finalists will be introduced and will be available for interviews. Press packets with bios and photos of each of the finalists will be distributed and made available electronically after the news conference. Six state regional committees comprised of teachers and parents each selected two of the 12 finalists.

Former Assistant State Superintendent Dr. Ramona Paul Passes Away

 

State Superintendent Janet Barresi learned of the death of Dr. Ramona Paul on Sunday night. Dr. Paul was a former Oklahoma Assistant State Superintendent of Education.

“I was deeply saddened to hear of the death of Dr. Paul,” Barresi said. “She is the pioneer who made early childhood education possible for the state of Oklahoma. We want to recognize all of her tremendous contributions to the profession and to students and families throughout our state. Our prayers and thoughts go out to her family.”

Fiscal Year 2014 Education Appropriation Approved
State Board of Education members in a special meeting on Wednesday approved spending for the more than $2.4 billion education appropriation for fiscal year 2014. The budget includes $74 million more than last year.
