National Math and Science Initiative Expands Comprehensive Advanced Placement Program at OKC's U.S. Grant High School

Oklahoma City (Nov. 15, 2013) – The National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI) announced today that its Comprehensive Advanced Placement (AP) program will expand to U.S. Grant High School, in the Oklahoma City School District, thanks to the generosity of a partnership with Boeing and the Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE).

Winning Attitude

I first visited Tushka Schools in April 2011, after a tornado destroyed the district’s main school building. It was a heartbreaking scene – much of the building was in ruin, many students and teachers were displaced form their homes, and district staff worried about how they would finish the school year.

I visited the Atoka County district again about a year ago, and I made my third trip last week. I can hardly express how thrilled I am with the fortitude of the students, teachers and administrators in Tushka.

Regional Trainings for Safe Schools and Bullying Prevention Act

In order to assist districts in complying with the Safe Schools and Bullying Prevention Act (HB 1661), regional meetings for administrators and school employees will be provided by the Oklahoma State Department of Education in collaboration with the Oklahoma PTA. Regional meetings are scheduled to begin in January, 2014, and will take place in regions located throughout the state.

Superintendent Barresi urges legislation to tighten accountability for virtual charter schools

Amid the growth of state “virtual” charter schools, state Superintendent of Public Instruction Janet Barresi is calling for legislation to strengthen academic and financial standards for such entities.

While a proponent of charter schools, Barresi said the relatively new phenomenon of virtual charters needs to be held to the same standards of accountability and transparency that are applicable to other charters in the public school system.

“Oklahoma’s public schools predate statehood, while virtual charter schools have been around for but a handful of years,” she said.

Spring 2014 Wave Trainings Scheduled

The Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) Student Information Office is conducting Regional In-Person training opportunities in January and February.  The focus of the Spring Training will be the upcoming Spring 2014 Data Certification Projects and best practices for the successful completion of these projects. As with the Spring 2013 projects, the Spring 2014 Data Certification Projects involve certifying student-level data in the Wave that SDE will use to populate the following reports:
