Online State Testing Update

The State Department of Education informed district testing coordinators and superintendents on Wednesday morning to begin online testing again after receiving word that the CTB/McGraw-Hill system was operational after two days of disruption due to out-of-state server problems.

Governor Mary Fallin and State Superintendent Janet Barresi kicked off the State Department of Education’s 2013 Summer Reading Program – Read 5 for Summer on Friday morning.  Surrounded by students, parents and educators from Putnam City’s James L. Dennis Elementary School at one of the state’s newest libraries -- the Patience S. Latting Northwest Library in Oklahoma City – everyone left ready to find five good books this summer.

For many Oklahoma students and teachers, if summer break isn’t already here it is just days away. We’ve had a great school year here in Oklahoma, and I hope everyone enjoys their summer vacation. But, learning should not stop just because it is summer break.

Tornado Damage Update
State Superintendent Janet Barresi updated State Board of Education members on tornado damage in the metro area – particularly in the Moore School District – during Thursday’s regularly scheduled board meeting.

Miracles In Our Midst

 

Last week was full of such promise – graduation celebrations planned for thousands of Oklahoma teens, the start of summer vacation for children and the fun that includes, the end to a busy school year for educators. All of that changed on May 19th and 20th.  Deadly tornadoes killed more than two-dozen people and destroyed many, many homes in Shawnee, Carney, Bethel Acres, Newcastle and South Oklahoma City. However none were more affected than the community of Moore and the Moore Public School District.

Current Version OF GED® Test to Expire at End of 2013

 

The current version of the GED® test will expire at the end of 2013. 

The 2002 Series GED® test will be replaced with the new 2014 GED® test on January 2, 2014.

Oklahoma State Department of Education Replaces Lost Teaching Certificates

 

Many educators across the state lost a great deal during the severe storms and tornados that occurred in May. To help certified personnel, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Janet Barresi announced today that the State Department of Education will waive the $25 replacement fee for certified educational certificates for those that may have lost their certificates as a result of storm damage from now through the end of the 2013-2014 school year.

May 2013 Storms Cause Millions of Dollars of Damage to Oklahoma School Sites

 

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Janet Barresi announced today that as of a last count on June 6 as many as 56 school sites were damaged by the severe storms and tornados that ripped through the state from May 19 to 31. Three of those sites were completely destroyed in Moore. In addition, the El Reno campus of the Canadian Valley Technology Center was destroyed.
