Love’s Creative SPARKS! Awards Announces Call for Entries

Love’s Creative SPARKS! Awards are open to all Oklahoma students K-12, including public, private, public charter, and homeschool students. The awards recognize students with creative ideas who use their imagination to envision a more creative learning environment that can be put into action in their school community.

Six Oklahoma Schools Receive Blue Ribbon Status

Six Oklahoma schools were named Blue Ribbon Schools on Friday, Sept. 7, 2012. The schools are among 269 national Blue Ribbon Schools. Schools are selected as Exemplary High Performing Schools or Exemplary Improving Schools.

Mock Election Gives Students a Voice

The My Voice™ National Student Mock Election recently opened "voter registration" for students participating in the program. The program gives students across the country the opportunity to cast their votes for candidates in both the federal and state elections, and to talk about the issues they care about this fall and beyond.

Oklahoma Elementary Schools Receive STEM Awards

Ten Oklahoma elementary schools recently were named K20 STEM–Building STEM-Ready Elementary Schools. The first-time designation comes with grant funds for teacher training at the schools in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math. The program is sponsored by the Oklahoma State Department of Education in collaboration with the K20 Center.

Handing Out Blue Ribbons and STEM Awards

Recent awards include six Oklahoma schools named among 269 national Blue Ribbon Schools and 10 elementary schools named K20 STEM-Building STEM-Ready Elementary Schools. I'm proud of the work that went into earning these titles and excited for what this means for the students in these schools.

Rising Star Teachers Recognized

State Superintendent Janet Barresi recognized six Rising Star Teachers from across the state during Tuesday’s state Teacher of the Year Ceremony,. Rising Stars are teachers who have been in the classroom seven years or less but who show an amazing amount of promise in their profession.

Fairview Math Teacher Named 2013 Teacher of the Year

Elaine Hutchison, an Algebra II, trigonometry, pre-calculus and AP calculus teacher at Fairview High School and Chamberlain Middle School in the Fairview School District and at the Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics Regional Center, was named the 2013 Teacher of the Year by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Janet Barresi during a ceremony Tuesday at the Oklahoma State Fair.

Honoring Great Teachers

Honoring great teaching is one of the most rewarding parts of my job. This week I honored Elaine Hutchison, a math teacher from Fairview Public Schools, as the 2013 Oklahoma Teacher of the Year.

Oklahoma State Board of Education Meeting Highlights, Sept. 27, 2012

Elaine Hutchison, the 2013 Teacher of the Year, was recognized at the State Board of Education's regular monthly meeting Thursday. Board members also were given updates on A-F School Report Card data verifications and recent TLE Commission preliminary recommendations.

Triggering Necessary Change

The movie “Won’t Back Down,” now in theaters, details the struggle of a parent and a teacher fighting to take over a chronically failing school. Because of the very real plight of parents and children in situations similar to those portrayed in the movie, State Supt. Janet Barresi has pledged her support to state Sen. David Holt who promises to file Parent Trigger Legislation in the next Legislative session.
