Gov. Fallin, Supt. Barresi to host schoolchildren across state for Dec. 2 Christmas tree-lighting

Christmas Tree decorated by studentsOKLAHOMA CITY (Nov. 17, 2014)  — More than 550 schoolchildren from throughout Oklahoma will converge on the state Capitol on Tuesday, Dec. 2, for the lighting of the state Christmas tree. Gov. Mary Fallin and state schools Superintendent Janet Barresi host the annual event.

Snow Schedule for Professional Development

The State Department of Education has made the following changes to its professional development schedule for Monday, Nov. 17, because of weather conditions.

The Kingfisher PASS-Plus academy for English and math teachers and the Town Hall meeting have been canceled because of inclement weather.

Science standards workshops will still take place in Woodward.

LETRS literacy training at Rose State College will start at 11 a.m.

Notice of Rulemaking Intent/Public Comment

On October 15, 2014, Notices of Rulemaking Intent (NRI) were published in the Oklahoma Register notifying the public of proposed amendments to four rules in Title 210 for the State Board of Education. Copies of proposed draft rules and Rule Impact Statements are available at  http://ok.gov/sde/administrative-rules.

OKToy Blog: The power of team

The first Saturday of November every year holds a special place in my heart. That’s when high school distance runners gather in many places across the country to compete at state championships. This weekend I took part in such a display and was reminded again that our profession extends beyond textbooks, standards, assessments or trophies.

Teacher pay raise, additional instructional days part of FY16 budget request approved by State Board of Education

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Janet Barresi asked State Board of Education members on Thursday to approve a $2,500 minimum pay raise for teachers and all certified personnel, excluding superintendents in the state. The request was part of the $2.78 billion budget request that will be presented to the Oklahoma Legislature for Fiscal Year 2016.
