OSDE Launches New School District Transparency Website

OKLAHOMA CITY (May 13, 2014) – The Oklahoma State Department of Education has launched a new transparency website for the public that houses all school district financial information reported through the Oklahoma Cost Accounting System (OCAS).

Supt. Barresi directs OSDE to use remainder of activities funds for teachers’ health insurance

OKLAHOMA CITY (May 14, 2014) – As the Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) has not yet received a supplemental appropriation for teachers’ health insurance premiums, known as the Flexible Benefit Allowance (FBA), state Superintendent of Public Instruction Janet Barresi has directed OSDE to use what remains in the schools’ activities funds to pay for the health insurance of Oklahoma’s fulltime district employees.

I remember how terribly heartbreaking it was to read the newspapers or watch the newscasts in the wake of the Moore tornado on May 20 of last year. Each new detail seemed more painful than the one before. Then came the devastating news that seven children had lost their lives when the tornado roared through Plaza Towers Elementary School.

Applications for Class 1 of OKMath and OKSci Leadership Now Open

OKMath and OKSci Leadership was piloted by the Oklahoma State Department of Education in 2013-2014 to create and support a dynamic network of Oklahoma Math and Science educators. OKMath and OKSci Leadership selects, challenges, develops and educates Oklahoma math and science educators who have demonstrated an interest in leadership skills related to mathematics and science education.

It’s the time of year when high school seniors have become high school graduates. After going through untold reams of paper and countless quizzes, these young men and women have finally donned cap and gown and set their sights on the next chapter of their journey.

We asked a lot of our Oklahoma students, and they delivered. Congratulations to the Class of 2014.

OKTOY blog: On being busy

“I didn’t ask you because I thought you were busy.” I always follow this heartbreaking comment with reassurance that the reason I am busy is for them, the students. Whether I am typing at my computer, reading a journal, organizing the classroom or rearranging some music, it is all for them. At the height of all of these duties, I most look forward to being “busy” with talking to and working with them.
