OSBI Investigates Possible Suicide After Traffic Stop in Payne County

The Payne County Sheriff’s Office requested OSBI help investigate an apparent suicide of a Cushing man. A county deputy attempted to stop a pickup truck driven by Clinton Craig Blakely (d.o.b. 9-4-1985) at approximately 9:30 Tuesday night on Highway 33, 5 miles east of Perkins after the deputy witnessed the vehicle’s driver run a red light. Blakely refused to stop, so the deputy and a Perkins police officer attempted a road block. When Blakely slowed his vehicle, officials commanded him to exit his truck. Blakely then drove toward the deputy. The deputy fired several times at the truck’s tires, which ultimately stopped the vehicle.

As the officers approached the truck, they noticed Blakely had suffered a gunshot wound to the head. A gun was also found in the cab of the vehicle. An ambulance transported Blakely to a Stillwater hospital where he died.

The medical examiner’s office will make the official determination of the cause and manner of Blakely’s death.
