Size & Weight Enforcement

Troop S, most commonly referred to as the Size and Weights division of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, enforce all state laws with a primary focus on Oklahoma statute Title 47 Chapter 14-109. All Troopers have a minimum of 5 years road experience and perform size and weight functions such as weigh commercial vehicles with portable scales, escort certain oversize/overweight loads traveling throughout the state, educating motor carriers, and enforcing federal regulations.

New State Law on 5% Gross and 8% Axle Weights

On November 1st, 2015 SB 638 took effect.  

The State of Oklahoma now uses the Federal Bridge Chart. This goes up to 8 and 9 axles on it and you can use the formula if there is more.

Additionally, there are changes for vehicles that are used to transport the following material:

Rock, Sand, Gravel, Coal, Flour, Timber, Pulpwood, Chips in their natural state, Oil field fluids, Oil field equipment or equipment used in oil and gas well drilling or exploration, Grain, Fertilizer, Cottonseed, Livestock, Peanuts, Canola, Sunflowers, Soybeans, Feed, Any other raw agricultural products, Any other unprocessed agricultural products.

If these vehicles are registered for the maximum allowable rate for that vehicle they will get the following new percentage:
1.) Can weigh up to 5% over there Gross limits as set by the Federal Bridge Chart.
2.) The vehicle cannot exceed 8% of the axle limits set forth in Federal Bridge Chart.
3.) No component of the vehicle exceeds the vehicle manufacturer’s weight rating.
4.) Cannot operate on the Interstate Highways.
