In January 2007, the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (ODMHSAS) in collaboration with the Oklahoma Department of Corrections (DOC), implemented four Re-entry Intensive Care Coordination teams (RICCT); two in Oklahoma County and two in Tulsa County.
RICCT teams are designed to transition individuals with serious mental illness and co-occurring disorders from prisons to mental health and substance abuse services, as well as to support in the community related to housing, medical care, vocational opportunities and various community resources. This community intervention is critical in order to decrease recidivism of these individuals and assure they receive appropriate treatment including psychiatric medications, and support while living in the community. The RICCT teams serve individuals beginning with outreach in the prisons, and then through intensive specialized case management following their release to Tulsa or Oklahoma counties. RICCT staff collaborate with ODMHSAS Discharge Planners, facility Mental Health Treatment Teams, Probation Officers and the offender/consumer to help ensure optimal success. From February 2007 to February 2011 a total of 298 offenders have been served in the Re-entry Intensive Care Coordination (RICCT) Program.
