The Oklahoma Department of Corrections recognizes two types of specialized instructors:
A “certified subject matter instructor” is defined as any employee who authorizes through a certification process to teach in a specialized course such as firearms, CPR, self-defense, etc. Each employee must provide their Field Training Officer with a current copy of their certification in the specific area of instruction.
A “subject matter expert instructor” is defined as any employee who does not meet the definition of a “trainer”, who may or may not have completed Basic Instructor Development (Training for Trainers), but is recognized within the agency as a subject matter expert in the specific area of instruction. Subject matter instructors may be required to attend a content or application specific Basic Instructor Development course.
